The Muslim Burial Council of Leicestershire (MBCOL) received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service on June2.

By Elham Asaad Buaras

The charity, established 13 years ago, was awarded for acting “on behalf of the needs and requirements of the Muslim community locally, nationally and at a European level regarding the procedures and practices relating to the interment of the deceased.”

MBCOL Chairman Suleman Nagdi, told The Muslim News that the award “acknowledges the Muslim Burial Council of Leicestershire’s work which has championed social welfare issues affecting the all communities” and that it is a “just recognition for shaping the future of our existing burial and bereavement services. It has taken the lead in delivering a range of philanthropic programs, as well as encouraging a spirit of volunteerism and community service.”
In October 1995, MBCOL signed a historic legal agreement with Leicester City Council, the first of its kind in Europe which gave MBCOL authority to carry out burials seven days week at the Saffron Hill Cemetery in Leicester.
It also provides assistance and liaison service with other relevant organisations to enable the Muslim community to access suitable internment services and practices.

MBCOL has also been involved with consultation programs with local and central governmental departments in relation to the corners, death registration, burial grounds and other matters related to death.
